How to use GIF to PNG

  1. Drag and drop or browse to select your GIF image.
  2. Set the output format to PNG.
  3. Click "Convert and Download" to save the full-colour lossless PNG.

What is GIF to PNG?

GIF is a legacy format limited to a 256-colour palette, which was revolutionary in the 1990s but is now outdated for still images. Converting a GIF to PNG gives you a lossless file with full 24-bit colour depth, removing the colour banding artefacts that GIF's palette restriction causes.

Since this converter uses the browser's Canvas API, it captures the first rendered frame of the GIF. Animated GIFs will produce a PNG of the first frame only. If you need to convert all frames, a dedicated GIF-to-video or frame-export tool would be more appropriate.

PNG also supports transparency, and any transparent areas in the GIF will be correctly preserved in the converted PNG using a full alpha channel rather than GIF's single-colour transparency.

FAQ

Does the converter handle animated GIFs?
It converts the first visible frame of the GIF to a static PNG. Full animation conversion is not supported — only still images are produced.
Why does the PNG look better than the GIF?
GIF is limited to 256 colours, causing visible banding in photographs and gradients. PNG uses full 24-bit colour, so the converted image displays colours more accurately.
Is transparency in the GIF preserved in the PNG?
Yes. GIF supports single-colour transparency, which is carried over to a proper alpha-channel PNG during conversion, often with cleaner edges.
