What is WebP to PNG?

WebP is an efficient web format, but some older tools and systems do not yet fully support it. Converting to PNG gives you a universally compatible lossless file you can open in any image editor, operating system viewer, or document workflow.

The conversion is lossless in the sense that no additional compression artefacts are introduced: the PNG captures every pixel of the WebP exactly as it appears. If the WebP used lossy compression, those existing artefacts are preserved — PNG does not recover lost detail, it just stops any further loss.

If the WebP file contains an alpha channel (transparency), the resulting PNG will also be transparent — PNG supports the alpha channel natively.

FAQ

Why would I convert WebP to PNG instead of just using WebP?
Some image editors (especially older versions of Photoshop, Paint, and various design tools) do not open WebP natively. Converting to PNG ensures broad compatibility.
Will converting WebP to PNG restore quality lost during WebP compression?
No. If the WebP was lossy, that detail is gone. The PNG is a perfect lossless copy of the current WebP pixels, but does not undo prior compression losses.
Is transparency preserved when converting WebP to PNG?
Yes. Both WebP and PNG support alpha-channel transparency, so transparent areas carry over without modification.
