How to use BMP to JPG

  1. Drag and drop or browse to select your BMP image.
  2. Set the output format to JPEG and choose a quality level (85 % is a good default).
  3. Click "Convert and Download" to save the compact JPG.

What is BMP to JPG?

BMP stores every pixel as raw data with no compression, making even modest-resolution images enormous. A 5-megapixel BMP can easily exceed 15 MB. JPEG compression reduces this dramatically — often to under 1 MB — by discarding image data that the human eye is least sensitive to, such as fine colour variations in smooth areas.

Because JPEG has no alpha channel, any transparent regions in the BMP are filled with white during conversion. BMP files are rarely transparent, so this is seldom an issue in practice.

Use the quality slider to control how aggressively the image is compressed. A setting of 85–92 % produces excellent results for screen and print use while still achieving massive file-size savings over the original BMP.

FAQ

How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photographic BMPs, JPG at 85 % quality typically reduces file size by 90–97 %. A 15 MB BMP photo might become a 500 KB JPG with barely perceptible quality difference.
Is there any quality loss when converting BMP to JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression, so some image data is discarded. At 85–92 % quality the difference is imperceptible to most viewers. Use PNG if lossless quality is essential.
What if my BMP is black and white or a simple diagram?
For diagrams, screenshots, and flat-colour images, PNG usually produces a smaller file than JPG while being lossless. Consider using BMP to PNG for those image types.
