How to use Tile Calculator

  1. Choose Direct Area mode (enter m²) or Room Dimensions mode (enter length × width).
  2. Enter your tile width and height in millimeters (e.g., 300 × 300 for standard floor tiles).
  3. Set the grout gap (typically 2-5 mm) and waste factor (10% recommended for straight lay, 15% for diagonal).
  4. Click Calculate to see tiles needed, boxes, cost estimate, and the visual tiling grid.

What is Tile Calculator?

This calculator determines how many tiles you need by dividing the total area by each tile's effective footprint (tile dimensions plus grout gap). The waste factor accounts for cuts, breakage, and patterned layouts. Tiles are rounded up — you cannot buy a fraction of a tile.

The visual grid preview shows your tile layout to scale. Full tiles are blue, and partial edge tiles are highlighted in orange so you can see at a glance where cuts will be needed. Switch to Room Dimensions mode to input length and width directly instead of calculating area separately.

FAQ

How much waste should I add?
For a straight lay pattern, 5-10% is usually enough. For diagonal (45-degree) layouts, add 15-20%. Large format tiles (600mm+) in small rooms may need more waste due to proportionally more cuts. Always buy at least one extra box for future repairs.
Does this account for grout joints?
Yes. The calculator adds your specified grout gap to each tile dimension, so the effective footprint per tile includes the joint. This gives a more accurate count than simply dividing area by bare tile size.
How do I measure my wall or floor area?
For rectangular spaces, multiply length by width. For irregular spaces, divide into rectangles and sum. Use our Wall Area Calculator if you need to subtract doors and windows. All measurements should be in meters for this tool.
