What is Indent Text?

Indentation is a common formatting need — whether you are cleaning up code blocks, formatting bibliographies with hanging indents (like APA/MLA style), or simply adding structure to plain text documents. This tool gives you full control over indentation with space or tab characters at any depth.

Three modes are available: Add indent prepends spaces or tabs to every line. Remove indent strips leading whitespace. Hanging indent keeps the first line at the margin and indents all remaining lines — exactly what you need for bibliography entries and legal document formatting. All processing is client-side; your text is never uploaded.

FAQ

What is a hanging indent?
A hanging indent (or bibliography indent) keeps the first line of each paragraph at the left margin, while all subsequent lines are indented. It is the standard format for APA, MLA, and Chicago style bibliographies and reference lists.
Can I convert tabs to spaces?
Yes — this is supported in the underlying library. The convert-tabs-to-spaces option replaces all tab characters with your chosen number of spaces.
What is the maximum indent amount?
The UI supports up to 24 spaces or tabs. Larger values can be used in the underlying function but are rarely needed.
