What is PDF Remove Metadata?
PDFs carry hidden metadata — author name, document title, subject, keywords, creator application, producer, and creation/modification timestamps. This tool strips every metadata field, removes unreferenced resources, and assigns a deterministic ID so the output cannot be tracked back to the original. Ideal before sharing documents publicly, submitting anonymously, or cleaning files before archiving.
Uses qpdf with --remove-unreferenced-resources and --deterministic-id for maximum privacy.
FAQ
- What metadata is removed?
- Author, title, subject, keywords, creator (app that made it), producer (PDF library used), creation date, and modification date. Unreferenced internal objects are also purged.
- Does this affect the PDF content?
- No. Only metadata and unreferenced resources are removed. Page content, images, text, and layout are unchanged.
- Can metadata be recovered after removal?
- No. The output gets a deterministic (non-unique) ID, so the file cannot be traced back to the original even with forensic tools.
