How to use RC Beam Design
- Enter f'c, fy, and the ultimate moment Mu.
- Enter beam dimensions: web width bw, effective depth d, total depth h.
- For T-beams, enter flange width Bf and flange thickness ts (leave at 0 for rectangular).
- Review the required tension steel, compression steel (if needed), and neutral axis depth.
- Check the status and choose from suggested bar combinations.
What is RC Beam Design?
This tool performs reinforced concrete beam flexural design according to ACI 318M-19. It handles both rectangular beams and T-beams with flange in compression. The tool checks whether the neutral axis falls within the flange, calculates required tension steel, and determines if compression steel is needed.
Bar size suggestions with practical combinations are provided. The tool also warns when the section is too small for the applied moment.
FAQ
- What's the difference between rectangular and T-beam?
- A T-beam has a wider top flange (the slab) that contributes to compression capacity. Set Bf = 0 to analyze as a rectangular beam. For T-beams, the tool checks whether the neutral axis falls in the flange or web.
- When is compression steel needed?
- Compression steel (As') is required when the required tension steel exceeds the tension-controlled limit. This happens with high moment demands on relatively small sections. The tool will warn you and calculate the required compression steel.
